Youth Asset Building

Youth Asset Building Learning Hui (YAB)

YAB emerged from the Hawai‘i Youth Matters Initiative. YAB supports youth by designing and implementing youth asset-building strategies that encourage them to build their personal, family, and community assets so that they can pave their own pathway to:

  • security, stability, and self-sufficiency – building security, stability, and well being in their lives;
  • creating opportunities – creating new social and economic opportunities for themselves, their families, and their community; and
  • legacy – providing a chance for them to leave their own legacy.

    Formed in 2008, the YAB involved five youth-serving organizations, including MA‘O Organic Farms, Kula No Na Po‘e Hawai‘i, KEY Project, and Maku‘u Farmers Association with technical assistance from HACBED, that worked with youth ranging from ages 12 years old to 25 years old from the communities of Wai‘anae, Papakōlea, Windward O‘ahu, Pāhoa, and Miloli‘i. Over 630 youth were supported through activities that push asset building through education, financial education, savings, and career/employment opportunities. Youth dialogues and other program activities informed program design and policy implications.

    YAB provides the “space” for members to generate learning regarding effective strategies and approaches to asset building based on the perspectives and ideas from youth. YAB develops programs, services, and activities that provide the foundation for youth asset building in the communities they serve. The asset-building strategies and programs implemented include financial education, microenterprise development, and youth savings.

    An evaluation tool is used to collect baseline information for YAB to track and measure outcomes, challenges, and opportunities, as well as the impacts and effectiveness of the project. YAB continues to implement youth asset-building strategies and programs while learning and gathering data on lessons learned to better inform youth asset building across Hawai‘i.
